Window Tint Tools

Choosing the right tint tools

Tint tools work harder than wrap or PPF tools because they're moving a lot of water fast, and they're doing it on glass where any pressure error shows immediately.

Hard-card squeegees do the bulk work - pushing slip solution out from under the film across the middle of the window. Wing-edge and triangle squeegees handle corners, defroster lines, and the tight edges where cards can't reach. A softer card protects the film during initial positioning. For prep, razor scrapers strip old film and adhesive residue without scoring the glass. A heat gun (or steamer for shrinking) is essential for curved back windows where the film has to be shrunk to the glass shape before install.

Blade freshness matters more here than most people realise. A blunt scraper on rear defroster lines will lift them off the glass - an expensive mistake on a customer's car.

Kits vs individual tools

If you're setting up for tint work, a Tint Tool Kit will land the essentials for less than buying them piece by piece.

• Lite - the core kit for automotive tint installs
• Pro - steps up for regular work and flat-glass installs
• Pro Max - full loadout for a workshop running tint as a service

Individual squeegees, cards, and blades are the go for tinters who already have a setup and need to replace worn tools or add a specialist card for a specific job - three-window installs, headlight tint, or commercial flat glass.

Working in Australian conditions

Heat and humidity are both a factor. Australian summers push slip solution to dry faster, which shortens the working window before the film locks position. High humidity slows the drying phase after install, meaning fingers and small water pockets sit visible for longer - customers see them and worry, even though most clear on their own.

Most experienced tinters start early to avoid the worst of both. Indoor bays with controlled airflow help. If you're mobile, working in shade with a cross-breeze is usually the difference between a clean install and a callback.

FAQs

What tools do you need to tint a car?

The core kit is a hard-card squeegee for water expulsion, a wing-edge or triangle squeegee for corners and defroster lines, a razor blade holder with fresh blades, a slip solution bottle, prep cloths, and a heat gun (or steamer) for shrinking film on curved windows. A soft card for initial positioning is worth adding.

Are tint squeegees different from wrap or PPF squeegees?

Yes. Tint squeegees are firmer than PPF and wrap squeegees because they need to push water out from under the film. Using a wrap squeegee for tint means water pockets you can't clear. Using a tint squeegee on a wrap can mark the film.

Do these tools work for flat-glass tinting?

Yes. The same core tools handle residential and commercial flat glass - hard cards, wing edges, and blades. Larger flat-glass jobs benefit from the wider Pro Max kit, which includes tools for prep on bigger panes.

Can I use these tools for headlight tint?

Yes. Headlight tint uses the same squeegees and blades - the difference is technique and film choice, not tools. A triangle or corner squeegee is helpful for the recesses around the headlight housing.

Are these tools suitable for beginners?

Yes. The tools are the same regardless of experience - technique is what takes time. If you're just starting out, the Tint Tool Kit - Lite is the smartest way in without buying gear you'll replace within a season.
